Commission Terms and Conditions
Payment
For commissions purchased directly through my website, the full price of the commission will be displayed before you place your order. For bespoke commissions agreed with me directly, the price will be agreed with you before any work begins. Payment may be made using the payment options available through my website or by another payment method agreed with me directly. For commissions purchased through my website, payment is normally made in full when the order is placed. For larger or individually quoted commissions, a deposit and remaining balance may be agreed instead. Where a deposit arrangement is used, the payment schedule will be confirmed with you before work begins, and the remaining balance must be paid before the finished work is dispatched or collected. Any additional charges resulting from alterations or other work outside the agreed commission will always be discussed and agreed with you before that work is undertaken.
These terms apply to commissioned artwork ordered from Hannah Berrisford. By placing an order for a commission, you confirm that you have read and agreed to the following terms:
Reference Photographs
The quality and accuracy of the finished portrait depends considerably on the reference photographs provided. I will advise where possible if I believe a photograph may not provide sufficient detail for the requested portrait. By supplying photographs for use as references, you confirm that you either own the photographs or have permission from the copyright holder for them to be used to create the commissioned artwork.
Commission Process
Before work begins, we will discuss your chosen reference photographs, composition, dimensions and I’ve other relevant details for your portrait. An initial drawing will be provided for approval before painting begins. One round of reasonable alterations to the drawing is included at this stage. Once the drawing has been approved, it will form the basis of the finished painting. When the painting is complete, an approval photograph will be provided before the artwork is left to dry. One round of reasonable minor adjustments to the finished painting is included. Further alterations, or substantial changes to an already approved composition, may incur an additional charge. Any additional cost will be agreed with you before further work is undertaken.
Artistic Interpretation
Each portrait is individually painted by hand in my established artistic style. While I aim to create a faithful and recognisable representation of the subject, a commissioned painting is an artistic interpretation rather than an exact reproduction of a photograph. Examples of my previous work are available throughout my website and portfolio and should be used as a guide to the style and finish you can expect.
Timescales
Any completion date or timescale discussed when ordering is an estimate unless a specific deadline has been expressly agreed. Oil paintings require an appropriate drying period before they can be safely packaged and dispatched. I will keep you informed if there is a significant change to the expected completion or dispatch time. If you commission is required for a particular occasion or date, please make this clear before ordering so I can confirm whether this deadline is achievable.
Cancellations
Commissioned portraits are made specifically for each customer and are personalised goods. Once work has begun, cancellation and refund requests will be considered in light of the work already completed and costs incurred. This does not affect your statutory rights where an artwork is damaged or where you otherwise have rights under applicable consumer law.
Copyright & Use of the Artwork
Copyright in the commissioned artwork remains with Hannah Berrisford unless a separate written agreement translations copyright has been made. Purchasing a commission gives you ownership of the physical artwork for your personal use. It does not transfer the copyright or grant permission for the artwork to be reproduced, sold as prints or merchandise, or used commercially without prior written consent. You are welcome to photograph and share your portrait for personal, non-commercial purposes. I reserve the right to photograph and film commissioned artwork and its creation, and to use those images or footage in my portfolio, website, social media, promotional materials and other examples of my work. If the portrait is a surprise gift or needs to remain private until a particular date, please let me know when ordering and I will be happy to delay sharing it publicly until after that date.
Delivery and Collection
Available delivery or collection arrangements and any associated costs will be confirmed when ordering or before dispatch where applicable. Artwork will be packaged carefully for transit. Please contact me promptly if your artwork arrives damaged and retain the artwork and its original packaging so the issue can be assessed and, where appropriate, raised with the delivery provider.

Colour and Digital Images
Photographs of artwork are intended to represent the finished painting as accurately as reasonably possible. Colours may appear slightly different between the physical artwork and photographs views on different screens or devices.
Statutory Rights
Nothing in these terms is intended to exclude or restrict any rights you have under applicable UK consumer law
